Runza
Makes 12 Runzas
Ingredients
- Dough
- 4.5 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 packages yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- Filling
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 4 cups cabbage, chopped
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- For cheese runza: 12 slices cheese
Directions
- Whisk together 1.5 cups flour, sugar, and test in a large mixing bowl
- In a small saucepan combine milk, water, and butter. Heat until it reaches 120 degrees
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir lightly
- Add the eggs
- Add 3 cups of flour 1 cup at a time
- Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and allow it to rise for 1 hour
- Cook the beef and onion until meat is cooked through
- Drain the beef
- Stir in the cabbage, salt, and pepper. Cook until cabbage is warm and slightly wilted
- Once the dough is done rising punch it down and divide it into 12 portions.
- One at a time, roll each piece into a rectangle (about 6x8 inches)
- Put 1/2 cup filling into the center and place a slice of cheese on top.
- Fold the dough over the filling. Seal and tuck the edges
- Place onto a baking sheet
- Bake at 350 for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown
Notes:
- These freeze super well. Freeze separated on a sheet until frozen. Then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw them in the microwave or oven.
